CCMA: What initially sparked your passion for filmmaking?
Tracey: My passion for filmmaking was sparked at a young age through watching many documentary films, which inspired me to tell real stories with purpose and authenticity.
CCMA: How do you approach securing funding for your independent projects?
Tracey: I don’t actively seek external funding for my independent projects; instead, I self-finance to maintain full creative control and authenticity in the storytelling process.
CCMA: What strategies do you utilize to get your films seen by a wider audience?
Tracey: I focus on film festival submissions, targeted social media outreach, and community partnerships to help my films reach a wider and more engaged audience.
CCMA: How do you leverage social media and online platforms to connect with your audience?
Tracey: I use social media and online platforms to share behind-the-scenes content, festival updates, and meaningful moments from each project, creating a space for dialogue and connection with my audience.
CCMA: What are some of the most valuable lessons you've learned in your filmmaking journey so far?
Tracey: Some of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned include the importance of patience, staying true to your vision, and building trust with the communities and individuals whose stories you tell.
CCMA: Are you currently working on any new projects you'd like to share about?
Tracey: I’m not currently working on a new project, as my focus remains on my previous film Ndazkoh, which continues to connect with audiences through the festival circuit. It’s a deeply meaningful project rooted in community collaboration and Indigenous storytelling.
CCMA: In your opinion, what are the biggest opportunities and challenges facing independent cinema today?
Tracey: One of the biggest opportunities for independent cinema today is the ability to reach global audiences through digital platforms and festivals that champion unique voices. The greatest challenge remains securing visibility and support without compromising creative integrity in a highly commercialized industry.
CCMA: How do you plan to adapt your approach to distribution as new technologies emerge?
Tracey: As I’m transitioning into retirement, I don’t have plans to adapt to new distribution technologies. My focus now is on supporting emerging voices and preserving the integrity of my past work.
