Many things make up Nimona. She is a rebel. She is a catalyst, an agitator, and an agent of disorder. She has the ability to change form and can become any animal or human you can imagine. She, on the other hand, is a survivor above all else. It is a minor miracle that her story has finally reached our screens. Following studio reorganizations, a devastating cancellation, and a miraculous resurrection, Nimona arrives on Netflix. You are at risk of underestimating her.
Blue Sky, the animation studio responsible for the Ice Age series and Spies in Disguise, was developing Nimona at the time, based on the fairytale-trope-subverting graphic novel by ND Stevenson. Then, a mouse, of all things, killed it. Even though the movie was said to be 75% done when Disney bought 21st Century Fox, the animation studio soon stopped making Blue Sky and stopped making Nimona as well. Nimona was also cancelled. All seemed lost. However, in its darkest hour, a shining knight appeared. The film was resurrected by Annapurna Pictures for Netflix.
Under the surface, daring activities are taking place. But you'll first notice the beautiful surface, which features cell-shaded textures, blocky colors, geometric facial features, and a beautiful hybrid of 2D and 3D animation. Although less radical than Spider-Verse and its ilk, it is a stylish representation of the film's sharp, modern outlook. Visually, it feels unlike anything else in the current animation landscape. It begins with a dramatic turn at the kingdom's excellently-monikered "Night to Knight Knights," where daring heroes still don shiny gold armor and the legacy of legendary warrior Gloreth lingers, but that over the course of a millennium has become a bustling metropolis in which neon-lit spaceships soar through the sky. The visual gleam is perfectly suited to Nimona's distinctive world, which is a futuristic version of a high that speaks volumes about Nimona's perspective, one foot in the past, the other boldly moving forward.
