Armand Arekian | Interview
CCMA : What initially sparked your passion for filmmaking?
Armand : In 2017 I wanted to write a book, so I did. I self published in 2019, and it was really cool to have written a book. After that, I wanted to see if I could turn it into a screenplay. It took a little while to learn the differences in formatting and technique, but I managed to teach myself (with much help from Google searches), and I eventually had my first draft of my first screenplay. Believe it or not, I found the screenwriting much more satisfying. From that point on I've been writing screenplays.
CCMA : How do you approach securing funding for your independent projects?
Armand : While I have not been directly involved in fundraising, I am involved with some projects that heavily utilize crowdfunding. When the time comes in my career for me to produce my own project, I'm sure I will initially go that route too.
CCMA : What strategies do you utilize to get your films seen by a wider audience?
Armand : I try to write to a more general audience. While I do have some niche scripts, a screenplay about the current state of our politics might not appeal to a larger audience the same way an action crime thriller would.
CCMA : How do you leverage social media and online platforms to connect with your audience?
Armand : I admit it--I'm really bad at social media. Sure, I have all the accounts, but I find that all the platforms are just saturated in too much crap. If I can't see who and what I'm following, is anyone really seeing me? It's not like it used to be.
CCMA : What are some of the most valuable lessons you've learned in your filmmaking journey so far?
Armand : You WILL be rewritten. And everything is very subjective, don't let it get you down.
CCMA : Are you currently working on any new projects you'd like to share about?
Armand : Like everyone, I am always working on new projects--features and shorts--but I don't have anything specific to share at the moment.
CCMA : In your opinion, what are the biggest opportunities and challenges facing independent cinema today?
Armand : Challenges: Netflix, Amazon, Apple, and Hulu. Opportunities: Fortunately, there are still other streaming services that are more willing to accept the independent film.
