INDIAN PAVILION AT CANNES: “MANTO” PRESS CONFERENCE

By Yubo Fernández I covered the press conference of Manto, at the Indian Pavilion in Cannes.

Director Nandita Das is currently producing Manto, a Bio Pic about Indo-Pakistani writer Saadat Hasan Manto. Staring film actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Rasika Dugal. The filmmaking team behind the project attended the Indian pavilion at the Riviera in Cannes Film Festival for a Q&A Session. Manto was a political engaged writer whose work was infused with deep humanism. He gave voice to the voiceless by turning the spotlight on factory workers, prostitutes and others existing on the margins of society," says Das, explaining why her film is timely. Manto focuses on four years of the life of the iconic Urdu writer who presented a brutally honest portraiture of the madness that gripped the subcontinent in the late 1940s. "The relevance of his sotires hasn't diminished one bit. If anything, it has increased," she says. This is not the first time we see film actor-director Nandita Das in Cannes, shes been twice at the film festival as Jury, also she finds it fascinating not just cause the glamour and red carpet but cause de diversity and the opportunities that brings the film festival.
