CAT'S PICKS FILM
Cult Critic Monica

Director:  Andrea Pallaoro

Writers: Andrea Pallaoro | Orlando Tirado

Starring: Emily Browning | Patricia Clarkson | Trace Lysette

Genres: Drama

Interest 20

Family members have shunned Monica. Despite the fact that she hasn't seen her mother in a long time, she decides to go back home to help care for her dying mother. Yet again the conditions are a long way from ideal and certain insider facts are yet to be uncovered, and with relinquishment, still new on the psyche, this cracked family should join for the last snapshots of a matron's life.

Accompanying the story is a very good soundtrack with impeccably picked tunes, for example, Mash's Ordinary citizens which plays over the radio and offers somewhat more clarification into the account. They serve as clues in a film that is usually very vague, and you know you need help keeping up with this story. The film also benefits from the performances of everyone involved, especially Lysette, who really shines in the role and uses all of her acting skills to show this nearly-broken woman at her darkest and brightest.

Additionally, Monica is too slow. Aside from an unseemly simulated intercourse and a few close minutes among mother and little girl, it truly battles to get the notice of individuals that have required two hours to see it. Because it isn't as sophisticated as it seems, its lack of disclosure makes it feel more like a missed opportunity than anything else. Even though it could have been exactly that, what begins with the promise—or, at the very least, the allure—of genuine drama and pure emotion quickly becomes none of these things.
