Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is a film, brimming with gunfire and blasts that cause you to feel trapped amidst risk. And like a lot of war movies, it has a short story about making heroic choices. John Kinley, a US Army sergeant stationed in Afghanistan in 2018, is played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Ahmed, his Afghan interpreter, saves his life. In the sort of solitary endeavor that just occurs in films, after Kinley gets back and discovers that Ahmed and his family are being pursued by the Taliban for having helped the Americans, he gets back to Afghanistan to attempt to save him. Up to this point, simply one more business experience.

It would be one of the sincerest depictions of the country's role in the region if "The Covenant" were only an examination of the hollowness of American exceptionalism, as its first hour suggests. However, Ritchie eventually regains consciousness, elevating this action-combat film to gory territory.

It was possible for "Guy Ritchie's The Covenant" to be more than just a powerful, overwrought war film. It might have been a noteworthy and controlled, provocative assessment of what turned out badly in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, Ritchie is unable to fulfill the latter promise.
