You Or Me
You or Me
The actual definition of existence, the conflict between two entity of the same personality, allegorical presentation of a psychological definition is the treasure hidden in the six minutes film YOU or ME. With eye-catching cinematography, the self-realization of a man is the real tune here. The usage of symbol and appropriate film language makes the story unique yet oddly familiar. The editing of the film plays a significant role in telling the message to the audience. Finally, there is no extravaganza. The film sets on what its aim is and shoots a perfect bullseye. In a single short film, the definition of mind and existence is uniquely elaborated by the Director Yana Zinov.
'My reality is a fabrication of my mind.', utters Parker, who is the central character of the film. He is searching for the definition and nature of life and mind. Not necessarily linearly, the film takes unexpected turns. This creates a vibrant image where the story of time mixes with the technical aspect of filming and timing. The existence of human being is the insignificant image of themselves which is entirely guided by constant creation and destruction. In the large space and time, everybody is under the process of death and rebirth. Human thoughts are fabricated without us even knowing. In the film, the two entities of the same existence are explored. A Newyorker meets a stranger who wonders whether he or Parker even exist. But from the very beginning, they are both fabricated by what they like in life. These two entities conflict with each other, but in the film, it is shown that both are the puppet of creation and destruction. At the last part of the film, the resonance comes from the central character Parker, "This is the nature of my existence." The script and screenplay are very simple but deeply significant, narrating the story of the nature and definition of life. The film language depicts the delicate explanation of the theme of the film. Different figures and faces are shown in massive cuts after cuts are the fabricated minds with brilliant film language which makes a film artistical. To make it successful, the editing of the film takes a significant role. Clean lighting and sound score, particularly in the moments of explaining the fabrication gives a deeper meaning. The central character Parker, played by Drews Schrum acts wonderfully.
Also, scenes although simple, perfectly tie one to another providing a dynamic experience. The angles of the camera are apt appropriate in all aspect. In six minutes of continuous watching, the film will never make the viewers bored. We can say that the story of Six billion years of the universal nature of human being is told in six minutes. The dimension and the ways of minds are one kind of labyrinth. This labyrinth never gives the scope to get the proper ways to come out. Fabricated minds and the insignificant image of the existence is the universal aspect of this cosmic universe. Practically the film YOU or ME deals with the in-depth nature of this life. The camera work is subtle and never overruns the story. For instance, there are no zooms which might ruin the story flow otherwise. For the most part, the film consists of simple and direct shots. The straightway shots are edited with a delicate sense of cinematic presentation. All the success of the film is hidden in the 'face and figure show' of a dancing rhyme. To put it simply, the camera and the story dance a perfect synced dance. After watching the entire film, we have to stop and think about how much we actually know about ourselves. You’re left with that question and here the film hammers the final nail in what it means to be human.
