“Starship Troopers Deadlock”, a short film directed by Steffen Werner which is a fan made movie on the franchise of the starship troopers. It is based in the same universe of the Starship Troopers. The film follows a small squad preparing to protect the earth from new species.
This small squad is trained for gunfighting and fast paced environment. We see some of them standing on planks and trying to level their balance. The commander tells them, that they have not been chosen to save the earth because of their good looks, but because they are trained and skilled for this purpose, and that they are the best they have at this point. The film has a unique way of making a funny presentation that brings smirks and laughs to the viewers. The visuals of the spaceships while they are on their way to the planet is also beautifully portrayed. The jet engines, the ship itself and the rocket fuel buzzing out through it are very nicely implemented for any viewer to notice. The spaceship lands at their prescribed destination in search of a creature that is devastating and can destroy the earth. Our young squad members, prepped up with guns and armor go ahead making their way around the planet.
The troop is commanded by a commander and they suddenly come across a helmet, that appears to be highly set on futuristic technology, even having a real time tracking device in it for enemy movement. The commander reminds them, that the foe they are facing is not ordinary, and all they can trust is their armor suits and guns. So, they have to be technical rather than aggressive in this fight. Only one of the girls in this troop appear to have this highly techy helmet on.
All packed up with gear and guns, we are approached with an action-based scenario. Suddenly as the group is making their way through the cabins, they are faced with a troop of enemies shooting towards them. They seem to have powers that are not humanly possible to inherit. Suddenly what appears to be a big robotic spider appears out of nowhere and one of the troop members is stuck while she shoots him and the bullet makes no damage. The armor he possesses is of excessively high quality fibre and the bullets don’t affect it at all. The commander keeps telling her to fall back but she is stuck in a corner. The commander takes charge to rapid-fire at this formidable enemy but by this time the enemy seems to cause an ultrasonic sound and makes our troop member faint.
In this exact moment, the film delivers with an amazing moment, with a slow-motion aspect of a bullet being released through a gun and hitting the spider’s weak point shaking him from within, finding the loophole to survive this battle. The commander in this fight, loses his leg as it burst open when the spider strikes back, the fight ends with our troop emerging victorious.
The film ends on a note that our troop has successfully saved the earth from the grasps of the aliens or species and one of the fighters in the troop is promoted to becoming a corporal. A short action flicks any movie lover would enjoy and the director’s notice to all the small details in this movie is commendable. The visuals, the acting of the lead cast both are to be appraised. The sarcastic and comedic elements hit straight on point and add to the comical nature of the film even in the most intense moments.
