“Dementia”, a short movie directed by Bella Merlino as the name suggests deals with the disease “Dementia.” The film begins showing and depicting that the grandfather of our protagonist was a great soccer player in his time but now suffers from dementia, and he does not even remember a thing about soccer.
The depiction of dementia through the audio-visual of a young girl describing her grandfather’s painful experience really shakes some strings to the heart. Dementia is a disease that can affect any human being at any given time, as the brain declines to send synapses or stops functioning properly. Severe forms of dementia may cause people to forget how to eat, shave, and walk. A daily day-to-day activity just vanishing out of thin air one morning. Imagining this gives me the creeps itself! The film shows the utmost care needed for treating dementia patients. The grandchild describes every difficulty in an obvious way. Her grandmother took care of her husband for a long duration of her life with the maximum care. She used to make him eat, shave him, help him walk, etc. She was later diagnosed with cancer and even in the hospital while her treatment was going on, all she could focus on was to be there to help her husband out through dementia.
After a certain point in time, the time came that she was unable to be there for her husband, and the caretakers took him for therapy sessions. The film shows us the excessive amount of care a dementia patient has to be dealt with and how sorrowful we feel through the movie as we see the grandfather forgetting things in a matter of minutes. The film shows us a caretaker who has taken care of him for the past 58 years but he clearly does not remember a thing.
Dementia, as a disease is not even known to the public. Most of us only know the term “Dementia” but don’t even know the meaning of it. The film shows us this scenario too. The main motto or message of this film is to care for people with dementia because it has various forms and none of its forms are not fatal. Be there for your family members or loved ones who may have dementia and provide them the most care you can.
