In The Only One Left, Kit McDeere is sent to Hope's End to care for Lenora Hope, who is well-known in the community for allegedly killing her Mother, Father, and Sister. Only that the police were unable to establish it. She has never left Hope's End, her home, or the mansion where the massacre took place, despite her denial of the incident.

A series of strokes rendered Lenora mute, and the only way she communicates with Kit is by typing sentences on a typewriter. One-night Lenora advises Kit that she needs to tell her beginning and end. It becomes abundantly clear as Kit assists Lenora in writing her story that there is more to it than people are aware of. Kit begins to doubt whether Lenora is as harmless as she initially believed. Kit develops a strong bond with Lenora and becomes increasingly unsure of her client's innocence as she pursues the truth about her family's deaths. Despite being fairly well-informed, Sager surprises with his usual collection of jaw-dropping twists.

We have always enjoyed the other books by Riley Sager, but this one piqued our interest and kept us hooked until the very end. There were so many unexpected turns and revelations of secrets. Regularly I'm ready to sort these accounts out prior to arriving at the end yet there were several major turns towards the end that amazed us and we just didn't see them coming.
