Summer camp has always been a place to get weird on film, from Wet Hot American Summer to Heavyweights and Camp Nowhere. However, for the campers at the theater camp AdirondACTS, a few months away from home in order to practice their skills as future stage stars and perform high-quality theater Based on the 2020 short film of the same name, Theater Camp is a loving parody of theater kids that is directed by Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman and has fun with its understandably over-the-top nature.
Theater Camp has a lot of the feel of being improvised, which can sometimes make it feel like some of the scenes don't fit in with the bigger story. Additionally, the majority of these film characters, particularly the students and a few of the secondary teachers, can appear to be rather monolithic. However, despite its flaws, Theater Camp succeeds because it prioritizes humor over everything else, jumps from concept to concept, and has a high joke per minute ratio.
Although Theater Camp has its flaws, the hilarious cast just like the film characters they play is up for anything, and the jokes are flying high and mostly landing. Theater Camp will not overwhelm Guffman as the extraordinary mockumentary of the stage any time soon, however Gordon and Lieberman show guarantee in this satire that comes from the heart.
